The clothing retailer known by the initials "H&M" is headquartered in which country?

The story behind the answer

H&M, the clothing retailer known by those initials, is headquartered in Sweden. Its corporate headquarters are in Stockholm, although the company operates stores, offices, suppliers, and distribution networks across many countries.

The business began in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947, when Erling Persson opened a women’s clothing store called Hennes, meaning “hers” in Swedish. In 1968, the company acquired the hunting and fishing retailer Mauritz Widforss, added menswear, and adopted the name Hennes & Mauritz. The familiar H&M abbreviation comes from that longer name.

H&M is therefore Swedish by origin and headquarters, but it is not a clothing manufacturer confined to Sweden. Like many large fashion retailers, it designs and markets products internationally and sources much of its production from overseas factories. This distinction explains why a garment’s production label may name a different country from the company’s home country.

The group has expanded beyond its original H&M brand, adding labels and concepts such as COS, Weekday, Monki, ARKET, and H&M Home. Stockholm remains the key corporate base behind this global retail group.
