The British TV series Dragon's Den is based on which Japanese business-investment show?

The story behind the answer

The British TV series Dragon's Den is based on the Japanese show Money Tigers.

Money Tigers established the format in which entrepreneurs present business proposals to a panel of wealthy investors. The investors question the presenters and may offer money in exchange for an ownership stake in the business.

Dragon's Den adapted this premise for British television, using the word “dragons” for its investors. The broader format later appeared in several countries, including the United States, where it became known as Shark Tank. The two programmes share the same underlying format but have different panels, presenters and national business markets.

A common mix-up is to identify Shark Tank as the original show. It is a later American adaptation, whereas Money Tigers was the Japanese source programme. The British series began broadcasting in 2005 and became one of the best-known versions of the format.
