The Battle of Plattsburgh was fought on which lake?
Answer
Lake Champlain
Answer
Lake Champlain
The Battle of Plattsburgh was fought on Lake Champlain.
The battle took place from September 6 to 11, 1814, during the War of 1812. It combined a British land offensive against Plattsburgh, New York, with a decisive naval engagement on the lake. American naval forces under Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough defeated the British squadron commanded by Captain George Downie.
The naval defeat made it impossible for Lieutenant General George Prevost’s army to sustain its advance. Although British troops had surrounded the American defenses and outnumbered the defenders, Prevost abandoned the land attack and retreated to Canada after losing control of the lake. The victory also helped strengthen the American negotiating position during the peace talks at Ghent.
The battle is often called the Battle of Lake Champlain, which can create confusion because Plattsburgh itself is a town on the lake’s western shore. It should not be confused with the major War of 1812 battles fought on Lakes Erie, Ontario, or Huron.
