The air-cushioned sole technology of Dr. Martens boots is trademarked under what name?

The story behind the answer

The air-cushioned sole technology associated with Dr. Martens boots is trademarked under the name AirWair.

AirWair is the branding most closely associated with Dr. Martens’ signature cushioned sole and is often displayed on the boots’ black-and-yellow heel loop with the slogan “With Bouncing Soles.” The sole uses air pockets in a PVC construction to provide cushioning and shock absorption while remaining durable and oil-resistant.

The original air-cushion idea came from German doctor Klaus Märtens, who developed a more comfortable sole while recovering from a foot injury. British footwear company R. Griggs Group acquired the rights, adapted the design for mass production, and launched the first Dr. Martens boot in the United Kingdom in 1960.

AirWair is sometimes confused with unrelated cushioning systems such as Nike Air Max or Adidas Boost. Those are separate brands and technologies. The familiar 1460 eight-eye boot also has other identifying features, including yellow welt stitching, a grooved outsole edge, and Goodyear-welted construction.
