The acronym NAFTA stand for North American what?

The story behind the answer

NAFTA stands for the North American Free Trade Agreement. The agreement created a trade framework linking the United States, Canada, and Mexico and was designed to reduce barriers to commerce among the three countries.

NAFTA was signed in 1992 and took effect on January 1, 1994. It built on an earlier free-trade agreement between the United States and Canada while adding Mexico to create a broader North American trading relationship. The agreement phased out many tariffs and established rules involving investment, services, and cross-border trade.

The treaty became politically controversial. Supporters argued that it expanded trade and integrated the economies of the three neighboring countries. Critics said it encouraged companies to move some manufacturing to lower-cost locations and contributed to job losses in certain American industries.

NAFTA was replaced by the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, commonly called USMCA, on July 1, 2020. Even after its replacement, NAFTA remains an important term in modern economic and political history.
