The 2017 Mercedes-AMG Project One concept car uses a hybrid powertrain derived from which racing series?

The story behind the answer

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG Project One concept car uses a hybrid powertrain derived from Formula One racing technology.

Project One was unveiled at the 2017 International Motor Show Germany as Mercedes-AMG’s attempt to transfer its championship-winning hybrid expertise to a road car. Its central combustion engine was based on the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 used in Mercedes’ Formula One program, though road use required substantial modifications for emissions, durability, drivability, and service intervals.

The system pairs the engine with four electric motors. One motor assists the crankshaft, another is integrated with the turbocharger, and two drive the front wheels. This arrangement gives the car all-wheel drive and allows energy recovery during braking and from the exhaust-driven turbocharger.

A common mix-up is confusing Formula One-derived technology with a powertrain taken directly from WRC, IndyCar, or Le Mans. The concept’s name later changed to Mercedes-AMG One, and the production car was unveiled in 2022.
