The 2014 Toyota FT‑1 concept later became which production sports car?

The story behind the answer

The 2014 Toyota FT-1 concept later previewed the production Toyota Supra, specifically the fifth-generation GR Supra commonly associated with the A90 designation. Toyota revealed the FT-1 at the 2014 North American International Auto Show as a dramatic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports-car study.

The FT-1 was not a literal production prototype: Toyota initially did not confirm that it would become the Supra or even reach production. Its design, however, strongly influenced the fifth-generation Supra, which Toyota introduced in 2019 after the Supra name had been absent from the market since 2002.

The production car was developed jointly with BMW and shares its basic architecture with the BMW Z4. That collaboration explains why the GR Supra uses BMW-related platform and engine technology, while Toyota retained rear-wheel drive and its own styling, tuning and model identity. “A90” is Toyota’s promotional designation; J29 and DB are associated with the underlying BMW model-code system.
