The 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe was a preview of the production Volvo S90 sedan.
Volvo revealed the Concept Coupe at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as an elegant two-door study built on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture, or SPA. Its styling introduced design cues that later appeared on Volvo’s next-generation large sedan, the S90, including the distinctive front treatment, restrained surfaces and “Thor’s hammer” daytime-running-light signature.
The concept was part of a planned design sequence led by Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath. The Concept XC Coupe followed it and previewed the second-generation XC90, while the Concept Estate explored themes later associated with Volvo wagons. These related studies helped establish a new visual identity after Volvo moved away from its older Ford-era platforms.
The Concept Coupe itself did not become an S90 coupe. Instead, its hybrid technology and many design ideas were adapted into the Polestar 1 production grand tourer. The S90 was the production sedan previewed by the concept; the XC90 was linked to a different member of Volvo’s concept trio.
