The 2007 movie Transformers is based on a vintage line of toys.
The film draws from Transformers, the toy franchise developed through a partnership between Hasbro and the Japanese company Takara. The original line launched in the 1980s and became famous for robot figures that could convert into vehicles, weapons, or other objects. The toys were supported by animated television series and comics, which helped turn the concept into a major multimedia franchise.
Directed by Michael Bay, the 2007 film centres on the Autobots and Decepticons, alien robot factions searching for the AllSpark. The movie uses the franchise's toy-and-cartoon mythology while adding a live-action human viewpoint through teenager Sam Witwicky. “Toys” is the canonical answer, although the wider property also includes cartoons, comics, games, and later films. Hasbro was both a major rights holder and a production partner on the movie.
