In August 2000, a dispute involving his older half-brother Benjamin Markowitz and drug dealer Jesse James Hollywood led Hollywood and associates to abduct Nicholas. The group initially intended to use him as leverage in a debt dispute. Nicholas was held for several days around Santa Barbara before being taken into the Santa Ynez Mountains.
