The 1999 Volkswagen Concept D later became which production car?

The story behind the answer

The 1999 Volkswagen Concept D later became the production Volkswagen Phaeton.

Volkswagen presented the Concept D at the 1999 International Motor Show in Frankfurt as a large luxury-car study. Its five-door liftback or fastback shape previewed the design and engineering direction of a future flagship sedan, rather than an upcoming Passat, Touareg, or later Arteon variant.

The concept used a 5.0-liter V10 TDI diesel engine, a six-speed Tiptronic transmission, four-wheel drive, and air suspension with adaptive damping. Those features signaled Volkswagen’s ambition to compete in the luxury market while emphasizing advanced diesel technology and high-speed refinement.

The production Phaeton arrived in 2002. It was a full-size luxury sedan built under Volkswagen’s D1 program and assembled at the transparent factory in Dresden, Germany. Although the Concept D had a hatch-like five-door body, the Phaeton was sold primarily as a conventional four-door sedan. That body-style difference can obscure the direct design relationship between the study and the production model.
