The 1964 Pontiac Banshee concept car was intended to rival which sports car?

The story behind the answer

The 1964 Pontiac Banshee concept car was intended to rival the Chevrolet Corvette.

Pontiac’s 1964 Banshee project, known internally as XP-833, was a compact two-seat sports-car study conceived as a serious performance alternative to Chevrolet’s Corvette. John DeLorean, then a leading Pontiac executive, reportedly called it a “Mustang Fighter,” but the car’s lightweight construction, long hood and short rear deck also positioned it directly against GM’s established sports car.

Several XP-833 prototypes were built, including a silver hardtop with a straight-six engine and a pearl-white convertible with a V8. The design previewed styling themes later associated with the third-generation Corvette, while its proportions and performance ambitions made it a potential threat within GM’s own product range. GM executives feared that a production Banshee could draw buyers away from the Corvette, which was marketed as the corporation’s top performance car.

The Banshee was never put into production. The project’s name is also confusing because Pontiac later used “Banshee” for other concept cars, including the 1966 XP-798 and later Banshee studies.
