Tangier is a coastal town in which Arab country?

The story behind the answer

Tangier is a coastal town in Morocco, located in northwestern Africa beside the Strait of Gibraltar. Its position gives it coastlines on both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of Morocco’s most strategically placed cities.

The settlement has roots reaching back to ancient Phoenician trading activity and was later influenced by Carthaginian, Roman, Islamic, European, and modern Moroccan cultures. In Roman times it was known as Tingis. The city’s location made it a natural meeting point for trade and diplomacy between Europe and North Africa.

Tangier became an international zone in 1923, administered by several foreign powers, and attracted diplomats, writers, artists, and adventurers. Morocco regained control of the city after independence in the late 1950s. Tangier is not Morocco’s capital—that is Rabat—but it is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.
