Sublime’s single “What I Got” was released under the album title Sublime.
The album was the Long Beach, California, band’s third studio record and their major-label debut. MCA Records released it on July 30, 1996, shortly after frontman Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May. Because the record became a breakthrough success after his death, it is often remembered as both Sublime’s defining album and the band’s final studio album featuring Nowell.
“What I Got” became one of the group’s best-known songs, blending acoustic guitar, reggae influence, and the band’s loose ska-punk style. Its chorus draws from “Loving” by Jamaican reggae artist Half Pint, while the verses have been noted for their melodic resemblance to the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna.”
The self-titled album also includes “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,” and “Doin’ Time.” A frequent mix-up is treating “What I Got” as the album title; it is the song title, while Sublime is the album title.
