Sarajevo is the capital of which country?
Answer
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Answer
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city lies in a valley in the Dinaric Alps of southeastern Europe and is built along the Miljacka River.
Sarajevo is both the country’s political centre and its largest city. It is also the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the administrative centre of Sarajevo Canton, making it important at several levels of government.
The city was founded in the Ottoman period and later developed under Austro-Hungarian rule. Sarajevo became internationally famous after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand there in 1914, an event that helped trigger World War I. It also hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.
A frequent mix-up is confusing Bosnia and Herzegovina with Bosnia, the country’s northern and central historical region. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the official country name, and Sarajevo is its national capital.
