Santo Domingo is the capital of what country?

The story behind the answer

Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic.

Founded by the Spanish in 1496 and relocated to the west bank of the Ozama River in 1502, Santo Domingo is widely regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the Americas. Its full historical name is Santo Domingo de Guzmán, honoring Saint Dominic.

The city sits on the Caribbean coast of Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is also the country’s largest city and its principal political, cultural, and economic center. The Colonial City contains landmarks such as the Alcázar de Colón and the Catedral Primada de América.

A common mix-up is confusing Santo Domingo with San Juan, Puerto Rico, another major Caribbean capital. Santo Domingo was briefly renamed Ciudad Trujillo from 1936 to 1961 during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, but its historic name was restored after his death.
