San Salvador is the capital of which country?

The story behind the answer

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador.

The city is located in the country’s central highlands, near the foot of the San Salvador Volcano. It is El Salvador’s political and cultural centre and forms the core of the country’s largest metropolitan area. Government institutions, universities, businesses and major transport links are concentrated in and around the capital.

San Salvador was founded by Spanish settlers in the sixteenth century after the Spanish conquest of the region. The settlement was moved to its present location in 1546, and it later became the capital of the Republic of El Salvador after independence from Spain and the breakup of the Federal Republic of Central America.

A common mix-up is confusing San Salvador with San José, the capital of Costa Rica, or with Santa Ana, another important Salvadoran city. El Salvador itself is the smallest and most densely populated country on mainland Central America, and its capital is also named San Salvador.
