Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton on June 17, 1987. His parents had moved there from Chicago in 1984, and Lamar grew up amid the social pressures and economic hardships that later became important themes in his writing. His childhood experiences in Compton strongly shaped the settings and perspective of his music.
He began releasing music as K.Dot while still in high school and later signed with Top Dawg Entertainment. His early project Overly Dedicated and the album Section.80 established him in West Coast hip hop before Good Kid, M.A.A.D City brought him international attention in 2012.
Compton is often associated with several influential rap artists, including Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, but Lamar’s story is distinct. He was not born in Oakland, Inglewood, or Long Beach.
