“Prepare for the next level” is the tagline for xXx: State of the Union. The 2005 action film is the sequel to 2002’s xXx, but it replaces extreme-sports athlete Xander Cage with a new agent, Darius Stone, played by Ice Cube.

Directed by Lee Tamahori, the movie follows Stone as he is recruited to stop a coup within the United States government. Willem Dafoe plays the principal antagonist, while Samuel L. Jackson returns as NSA agent Augustus Gibbons, who appeared in the first film.

The title is sometimes written informally as XXX: State of the Union, but the studio styling is xXx: State of the Union. It is also commonly confused with the original xXx, whose marketing emphasized extreme sports and international espionage rather than the sequel’s political thriller storyline.

The film was released in 2005 and was followed much later by xXx: Return of Xander Cage in 2017, which brought Vin Diesel back as Xander Cage.
