Phil Kessel led which NHL team in scoring during the 2011-12 season?

The story behind the answer

Phil Kessel led the Toronto Maple Leafs in scoring during the 2011–12 season.

Kessel finished the regular season with 82 points, made up of 37 goals and 45 assists. He played all 82 games and led Toronto in both goals and total points. His production made him the central offensive figure on a Maple Leafs team that scored 231 regular-season goals but finished outside the playoff places.

Kessel’s 2011–12 campaign began especially strongly. He was the NHL’s leading scorer early in the season and earned the league’s First Star of the Month award for October 2011. He was also selected for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, alongside Toronto teammates Joffrey Lupul and Dion Phaneuf.

“Scoring” in hockey usually means total points: goals plus assists. That distinction matters because Kessel’s 37 goals led Toronto, but his 82 points were also more than any other Maple Leaf. Joffrey Lupul finished second on the team with 67 points, while Mikhail Grabovski recorded 51.
