"Pan's Labyrinth" is set in what year?

“Pan’s Labyrinth” is set in 1944. Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy unfolds in post–Spanish Civil War Spain, five years after the Nationalists’ victory and during Francisco Franco’s dictatorship.

The story follows Ofelia, a 13-year-old girl who moves with her pregnant mother to the countryside, where her new stepfather, Captain Vidal, is hunting anti-Franco rebels. Ofelia encounters a faun who claims she is a reincarnated princess and gives her three dangerous tasks. The film deliberately places fairy-tale imagery beside the violence and repression of 1940s Spain.

A common mix-up is confusing the setting with the Spanish Civil War itself, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. The film takes place after the war, while guerrilla resistance continues. It premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a lengthy standing ovation, and its original Spanish title is “El laberinto del fauno.”
