On which mountains does Genesis say Noah’s Ark comes to rest?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” not the name of one mountain. Ararat was associated with an ancient region often identified with Urartu, located around parts of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. The biblical wording therefore does not explicitly name the modern summit Mount Ararat.

This distinction is a frequent source of confusion. Mount Ararat is the highest peak in Turkey and became the focus of many later searches and traditions about the ark. However, the Genesis text itself refers to a mountainous region rather than specifying that particular peak.

Reports of alleged ark discoveries have appeared for centuries, but no discovery has been scientifically accepted as the biblical vessel. The firm answer from Genesis is the regional phrase “the mountains of Ararat.”
