On which island was pirate Blackbeard killed in 1718?

The story behind the answer

Pirate Blackbeard was killed on Ocracoke Island in 1718.

Royal Navy lieutenant Robert Maynard pursued Blackbeard after Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia organized an expedition against him. Maynard’s two ships entered Ocracoke Inlet, where Blackbeard’s crew attacked after disguising the apparent weakness of Maynard’s vessels.

A close-quarters fight followed aboard Maynard’s sloop. Blackbeard was killed during the battle, and Maynard reportedly ordered that his head be displayed from the ship’s bowsprit. Ocracoke is part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and remains closely associated with Blackbeard’s final battle.

The island is sometimes confused with nearby Bath, North Carolina, where Blackbeard had lived under a pardon. Bath was his residence, but Ocracoke was the site of his death.
