On which German highway system are there sections with no posted speed limit? The answer is the Autobahn.
The Autobahn is Germany’s federal controlled-access highway system, officially called the Bundesautobahn system. It is famous because many stretches lack a blanket maximum speed limit for cars and motorcycles, although unrestricted does not mean that every section is limitless or that every vehicle may travel at any speed.
Where no posted limit applies, Germany recommends an advisory speed of 130 km/h, known as the Richtgeschwindigkeit. Mandatory limits are common near cities, interchanges, construction zones, accident-prone areas and roads affected by traffic, noise or weather conditions. Heavy vehicles, buses and cars towing trailers also face separate restrictions.
A frequent quiz trap is “Autobahn A9.” A9 is one numbered route within the larger system, while Autobahn is the name of the highway network. Bundesautobahn is the formal German term, but the familiar English answer to this question is simply Autobahn.
