On which date did Joan of Arc’s forces win the Battle of Patay?
Answer
18 June 1429
Answer
18 June 1429
Joan of Arc’s forces won the Battle of Patay on 18 June 1429.
The battle followed the French relief of Orléans. French troops pursued the retreating English army northward, and scouts discovered the English position near Patay. The English tried to prepare a defensive formation, but French forces attacked before that preparation was complete.
The French victory was unusually decisive for the later stages of the Hundred Years’ War. The English commander John Talbot was captured, while the French route toward Reims opened further. Patay is often compared with Agincourt, where English forces had achieved a famous victory in 1415; the outcomes were reversed at Patay.
