Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were both released on September 17, 1991. Guns N' Roses issued the two albums simultaneously through Geffen Records, presenting them as companion records during one of rock’s most anticipated releases.

The albums arrived after extensive recording sessions and delays, while the band had already begun its massive Use Your Illusion Tour in May 1991. Releasing both records together let the group present a much broader musical range, from hard-rock attacks and politically charged songs to orchestral ballads and long-form pieces.

The simultaneous launch made chart history in the United States: Use Your Illusion II debuted at number one and Use Your Illusion I at number two.
