On what date was the original Nintendo Switch released worldwide?

The original Nintendo Switch was released worldwide on March 3, 2017.

Nintendo launched the console simultaneously in major markets including Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia. This worldwide launch helped Nintendo present the Switch as a single global platform rather than a regionally staggered product.

The Switch followed the Wii U, which had struggled commercially. Its central idea was flexibility: players could use it as a home console connected to a television or as a portable system with its built-in screen. The detachable Joy-Con controllers supported both modes.

The launch date is sometimes confused with later Switch hardware releases. The Nintendo Switch Lite arrived in 2019, while the Nintendo Switch OLED Model launched in 2021. March 3 therefore refers specifically to the original Switch model, not the wider product family.
