On what date was Roald Dahl born in Cardiff, Wales?

The story behind the answer

Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff, Wales, on 13 September 1916.

Dahl was born to Norwegian parents, Harald and Sofie Magdalene Dahl. His father had moved to Wales from Norway, and the family lived in the Llandaff area of Cardiff. Dahl’s Norwegian background remained important to his identity and later writing.

His childhood in Wales helped shape several memories recorded in Boy: Tales of Childhood, including school experiences, family traditions, and holidays in Norway. Dahl later became one of the best-known British children’s authors, although he also wrote adult fiction, screenplays, and autobiographical works.

The date is sometimes confused with the date of his death, 23 November 1990. It is also distinct from the publication dates of his major books, such as James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
