On what date was Mahatma Gandhi assassinated in New Delhi?

The story behind the answer

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 in New Delhi.

Gandhi was shot while walking to an evening prayer meeting at Birla House, now called Gandhi Smriti. Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, fired three shots at close range. Gandhi reportedly greeted his attacker with the words “Hey Ram,” although the exact historical details of his final utterance are debated.

The assassination occurred less than six months after India became independent from British rule. Gandhi had been working to reduce Hindu-Muslim violence during the Partition period, including through fasts and peace missions. His death deeply affected India and produced national mourning.

30 January is observed in India as Martyrs’ Day, or Shaheed Diwas. It is distinct from 2 October, Gandhi’s birthday, which is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence.
