On what date was Joan of Arc captured during the fighting at Compiègne?
Answer
23 May 1430
Answer
23 May 1430
Joan of Arc was captured on 23 May 1430 during the fighting at Compiègne.
Joan was leading a sortie against Burgundian forces outside the town, which was allied with Charles VII of France. As the attack continued, the drawbridge was raised before all the French troops could return inside the fortifications. Joan remained outside with a rearguard and was seized by Burgundian soldiers.
Her captor was John of Luxembourg, a Burgundian nobleman. The Burgundians later sold Joan to the English, who wanted her removed from the conflict and placed her on trial at Rouen. The capture therefore came more than a year after her victories at Orléans and Patay, but before Charles VII had secured full control of France.
A common mix-up is to place Joan’s capture in 1429, the year of her best-known victories. The correct year is 1430, and Compiègne was in northern France, not near Rouen, where her later trial took place.
