On what date was Joan of Arc burned at the stake in Rouen?

The story behind the answer

Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen on 30 May 1431.

The execution followed a church trial conducted in English-controlled Normandy. Joan had been captured near Compiègne in 1430 and transferred to English custody, while the trial was held under the authority of Bishop Pierre Cauchon. The proceedings charged her with heresy and related offenses, although the political conflict between England and France strongly shaped the case.

Joan was about nineteen years old. Contemporary accounts describe a large crowd at Rouen’s Old Marketplace, where a high stake and plastered platform had been prepared. After the fire, officials burned the remains again and scattered the ashes in the Seine, according to the later testimony collected during the nullification inquiry.

A second church investigation eventually annulled the original condemnation in 1456. Joan was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920, but her execution date remains one of the central fixed dates in her biography.
