On what date was C.S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, born?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born on 29 November 1898.

His birthplace was Belfast, then part of Ireland and now in Northern Ireland. He was the second son of Albert James Lewis, a solicitor, and Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis, who was known as Flora. His older brother, Warren, became one of his closest lifelong companions.

Lewis grew up in a Protestant household and developed an early love of books, mythology, and imaginative storytelling. His childhood reading and invented worlds later influenced both his literary criticism and his fiction. The landscape and legends of Ireland also remained important background elements in his imagination.

Lewis lived during a period that included both World Wars. He served in the British Army during the First World War, later taught at Oxford and Cambridge, and became one of the twentieth century’s most influential Christian writers. He died in Oxford on 22 November 1963, one week before his sixty-fifth birthday.
