On what date was Canada’s current national flag first raised officially?

The story behind the answer

Canada’s current national flag was first raised officially on February 15, 1965.

The flag has a red field, a white square, and a stylized red maple leaf with 11 points. It replaced the Canadian Red Ensign and other earlier designs after a lengthy parliamentary debate commonly called the Great Canadian Flag Debate.

Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson supported a design with three maple leaves and blue side panels, while Prime Minister John Diefenbaker opposed it. The final design, created by George F. G. Stanley and refined by Jacques St-Cyr, was approved by Parliament in December 1964.

February 15 is now commemorated annually as National Flag of Canada Day. Canada Day, July 1, marks Confederation in 1867, not the adoption of the maple-leaf flag.
