On what date is the One Ring destroyed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s chronology?

The story behind the answer

The One Ring is destroyed on 25 March in J.R.R. Tolkien’s chronology.

The Ring is destroyed when Gollum bites it from Frodo’s finger and falls with it into the fires of Mount Doom. This occurs at the end of The Lord of the Rings, after Frodo and Sam reach the Cracks of Doom and Frodo claims the Ring rather than willingly giving it up.

In Tolkien’s calendars, 25 March became a date of major significance because it marked the downfall of Sauron and the end of the Third Age. Tolkien also used 25 March as the date of the Annunciation in the Christian calendar, a connection often discussed when interpreting the date’s symbolic importance.

This date differs from 22 September, the birthday shared by Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. It also differs from 2 September, the date Tolkien himself died.
