On what date is Father's Day celebrated in Taiwan?

The story behind the answer

Father's Day is celebrated in Taiwan on August 8.

The date is memorable partly because of a Mandarin wordplay. The number eight is pronounced bā, while the word for “father” or “dad” includes a very similar sound, bà. As a result, August 8—written 8/8—is popularly associated with “dad” and is sometimes nicknamed a “Bābā Holiday.”

Taiwan's observance differs from the United States and many other countries, where Father's Day is commonly held on the third Sunday in June. In Taiwan, August 8 is a fixed calendar date, making it easy to remember and giving the celebration a distinct local identity. It is widely observed but is not generally treated as an official public holiday.

The date is sometimes confused with other East Asian family observances, including Children's Day and Mother's Day. Taiwan's Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, while Father's Day keeps the distinctive 8/8 date. The repeated eights are therefore more than a numerical coincidence: they create the holiday's central linguistic pun.
