On what date did the Battle of Lake Erie occur?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Lake Erie occurred on September 10, 1813.

Also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay, the engagement was fought near the Ohio shore during the War of 1812. The American squadron was commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry, while the British fleet was led by Commander Robert Heriot Barclay. After the wind shifted, Perry’s vessels were able to close with the British line.

The fighting was intense, and Perry transferred from his damaged flagship Lawrence to Niagara before breaking the British formation. The American fleet captured all six British vessels, giving the United States control of Lake Erie for the remainder of the war.

That naval victory had major consequences on land. Perry transported American troops across the lake, enabling the capture of Amherstburg and Detroit and contributing to the American victory at the Battle of the Thames. The date is sometimes mixed up with the Battle of Lake Champlain, fought in September 1814.
