On what date did Mister Rogers' Neighborhood make its American national debut?

The story behind the answer

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood made its American national debut on February 19, 1968. The broadcast was carried by National Educational Television, or NET, the educational network that preceded PBS.

Before that national launch, Fred Rogers had already developed the program through regional educational television. He worked at Pittsburgh station WQED and had created earlier children’s programs, including The Children’s Corner. A funding grant from the Sears Roebuck Foundation helped make national production possible after the show faced financial difficulties in 1967.

The original national broadcast was often titled Misterogers' Neighborhood; the more familiar title, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, became standard later. Another frequent confusion is the distinction between the show's first American broadcasts and its national debut: Rogers had appeared on television earlier, and a regional version had already aired, but February 19, 1968, is the accepted date for the nationwide American launch.
