On what date did Joan of Arc enter the besieged city of Orléans in 1429?
Answer
29 April 1429
Answer
29 April 1429
Joan of Arc entered the besieged city of Orléans on 29 April 1429.
French forces had been defending Orléans against English and Burgundian troops since October 1428. Joan reached the area with a relief army, but she did not enter the city immediately. On 29 April, she crossed into Orléans while part of the French force approached from another direction.
The siege was lifted in early May after a series of French attacks on English fortifications. Joan’s arrival became a major symbol of renewed French confidence, although French soldiers and commanders had already been fighting before she appeared. The siege ended on 8 May 1429, a date sometimes confused with the date of her entry.
