On what date did H. P. Lovecraft die?

The story behind the answer

H. P. Lovecraft died on March 15, 1937.

Lovecraft died in Providence, Rhode Island, the city where he was born and where he spent most of his life. He had been hospitalized at Jane Brown Memorial Hospital after doctors diagnosed terminal cancer of the small intestine late in his illness.

His death came at age 46, ending a career that had produced influential stories such as “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Colour Out of Space,” and “The Shadow over Innsmouth.” During his lifetime, however, he remained relatively obscure and earned little from his fiction.

Readers sometimes confuse his death date with his birth date: Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890. Another important date is 1939, when The Outsider and Others became the first book published by Arkham House, two years after his death.
