On what date did David Bowie die?

The story behind the answer

David Bowie died on 10 January 2016.

The English singer, songwriter and actor died at his Lafayette Street home in New York City, two days after releasing Blackstar, his 26th and final studio album. The album arrived on 8 January 2016, Bowie’s 69th birthday, making the timing especially poignant for fans and collaborators.

Bowie had kept his liver-cancer diagnosis private for roughly 18 months. His death therefore surprised many friends, fellow musicians and fans, who learned of it through a statement posted on his official social-media accounts. He was 69 years old.

The news prompted tributes and spontaneous memorials in places closely associated with Bowie, including London, New York and Berlin. Sales and streams of his music surged, while Blackstar and its accompanying videos received extensive retrospective attention for their apparent engagement with mortality.

Bowie’s birth date is another frequent source of confusion: he was born on 8 January 1947, but died on 10 January 2016. He was cremated in New Jersey, and his ashes were later scattered in Bali according to his wishes.
