On what date did C.S. Lewis die, the same day as John F. Kennedy?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died on 22 November 1963, the same day as John F. Kennedy.

Lewis died at his home, The Kilns, near Oxford, on 22 November 1963. He was 64 years old. The date is also remembered because U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas that day, and writer Aldous Huxley died in California on the same date.

Lewis’s death received less immediate public attention because the Kennedy assassination dominated international news. His health had declined after a heart attack in 1963, and he had also experienced kidney problems. His brother Warren later described the final period of Lewis’s life and the circumstances surrounding his death.

The date is sometimes confused with the date of Lewis’s funeral or with the dates connected to his wife Joy Davidman’s illness and death. Lewis was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, Oxford, several days later.
