On what date did C.S. Lewis die at The Kilns near Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died on 22 November 1963 at The Kilns near Oxford.

The Kilns was Lewis’s home in Headington Quarry, outside Oxford. He died there after years of declining health, less than three weeks before his 65th birthday. His death date was also the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and the same day English writer Aldous Huxley died.

Lewis was buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington, Oxford. His brother Warren survived him and later helped preserve and publish material connected with Lewis’s life and work.

Because the date coincided with major international news, biographies sometimes mention it as part of a remarkable cluster of deaths. The coincidence does not change the precise biographical fact: Lewis died on 22 November 1963, at his Oxford home, The Kilns.
