On what date did C.S. Lewis die at his home in Oxfordshire?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died on 22 November 1963 at his home, the Kilns, in Oxfordshire. He was 64 years old. The date was also the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and it was the date of fellow writer Aldous Huxley’s death.

Lewis had experienced serious health problems in his later years, including a heart attack in 1961 and kidney failure. He continued some writing and correspondence despite declining health. His death occurred shortly before his sixty-fifth birthday, which would have fallen on 29 November.

The Kilns, a house outside Oxford, had been Lewis’s home for decades. He shared it with his brother Warren and, for part of the 1950s, with Joy Davidman and her sons. The house is now associated with the C.S. Lewis Foundation.

Because Lewis’s death coincided with two major deaths in public memory, accounts sometimes emphasize the wider historical date rather than the circumstances at the Kilns. His funeral took place at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry.
