Bitcoin Pizza Day is commemorated on May 22, 2010, the date of the first known commercial purchase made with Bitcoin.
On that day, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC to another Bitcoin user, Jeremy Sturdivant, in exchange for two Papa John’s pizzas. Hanyecz arranged the transaction through the Bitcointalk forum, making the event an early demonstration that Bitcoin could be used to buy a physical good.
The purchase is remembered because Bitcoin was still a small experimental payment network. Its exchange value was tiny compared with later prices, and the transaction is often discussed as an illustration of Bitcoin’s extraordinary appreciation. The pizzas themselves were not bought directly from a restaurant using Bitcoin; Sturdivant used the cryptocurrency arrangement to obtain them for Hanyecz.
Bitcoin Pizza Day is observed annually by cryptocurrency users, although it was not an official Bitcoin holiday. The date is sometimes confused with the date Hanyecz later made another pizza-related purchase, but May 22 refers specifically to the famous 2010 transaction.
