Johnson starred as Nash Bridges, a sharp-witted inspector—and later captain—with the San Francisco Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit. The character investigates crimes in the San Francisco Bay Area while juggling family problems, complicated relationships, and a famously casual attitude toward authority.

The CBS police procedural premiered on March 29, 1996, and ran for six seasons through 2001. Johnson appeared in all 122 episodes. Cheech Marin co-starred as Joe Dominguez, Nash’s longtime partner, providing much of the show’s comic contrast.

Nash Bridges was one of Johnson’s major television roles after Miami Vice, where he had played Sonny Crockett. The two characters were both stylish police officers, but Nash was written with a more openly comedic tone and a stronger focus on his family life.
