On Earth, which continent is also the world's largest desert?
Answer
Antarctica
Answer
Antarctica
Antarctica is the world's largest desert as well as the continent surrounding the South Pole.
A desert is defined by very low precipitation, not by heat or sand. Antarctica receives little snowfall because cold air holds little moisture; its interior gets less than 50 millimetres of precipitation annually in many areas. Most of that precipitation accumulates as ice because it melts very slowly.
Antarctica covers about 14 million square kilometres, making it larger than Europe and Australia. Around 98% of its surface is covered by an ice sheet. The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, but Antarctica is larger overall.
