What is the official currency of Bhutan?

The story behind the answer

The ngultrum is the official currency of Bhutan.

Bhutan introduced the ngultrum in 1974, replacing the Indian rupee as the country’s official monetary unit. The name comes from Bhutanese terms associated with silver, reflecting the currency’s historical and linguistic roots.

The ngultrum is subdivided into 100 chhertum. Bhutan’s currency is pegged at par with the Indian rupee, meaning one ngultrum has the same fixed value as one Indian rupee for the official exchange relationship.

Indian rupee notes and coins also circulate in Bhutan, although high-denomination Indian notes have had restrictions at various times. Bhutan’s central bank, the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, issues the ngultrum. The currency is used in the Himalayan kingdom between India and China, whose capital is Thimphu.
