What is the name of the deepest point in the oceans?

The story behind the answer

Challenger Deep is the deepest point in the oceans.

It lies in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, east of the Mariana Islands. Modern measurements place its depth at approximately 10,900 metres, although the precise figure varies slightly by survey method and location.

The first crewed descent took place in 1960, when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the bottom in the bathyscaphe Trieste. Film director and explorer James Cameron made a solo descent in 2012. Challenger Deep is named after HMS Challenger, whose expedition conducted important oceanographic surveys in the nineteenth century.
