Nukuʻalofa is the capital of which Pacific kingdom?

The story behind the answer

Nukuʻalofa is the capital of Tonga, the Pacific kingdom in Polynesia.

The city is on the north coast of Tongatapu, Tonga’s principal and southernmost island group. It is the country’s largest urban center and the base of the national government, Parliament, the Royal Palace, major markets, and the main deep-water harbor.

Nukuʻalofa’s importance grew during the 19th century as it became a center of Christianity and political power. Tonga’s Constitution, issued by King George Tupou I on November 4, 1875, formally established Nukuʻalofa as the capital and specified that Parliament should meet there except during wartime.

The city has faced major natural and political disruptions. Much of its central business district was damaged in the 2006 riots, while the 2022 eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai generated a tsunami that caused significant damage. Nukuʻalofa is sometimes confused with Suva, Fiji’s capital, or Apia, Samoa’s capital.
