New Delhi is the capital of which country?
Answer
India
Answer
India
New Delhi is the capital of India. It is a municipality within the National Capital Territory of Delhi and serves as the seat of India’s central government, including the president’s official residence, Parliament, and the Supreme Court.
The modern capital grew from the decision made by the British government in 1911 to transfer the capital of British India from Calcutta, now Kolkata, to Delhi. Architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed much of the new administrative district, often called Lutyens’ Delhi. New Delhi was formally inaugurated in 1931.
A common mix-up is treating Delhi and New Delhi as exactly the same place. Delhi is the much larger national capital territory and urban region, while New Delhi is a smaller municipality within it. The historic city of Old Delhi, including areas developed under the Mughal Empire, is also part of the wider Delhi metropolis. India retained New Delhi as its capital after independence in 1947.
